In a hard fought match where near perfect conditions prevailed, 24 of the North of England’s most experienced competition fly anglers battled it out to be crowned 2011 Esthwaite Pairs Champions. In total 65 fish were weighed in for a total of 109lb 4oz. In third place Adam Larbalestier and Ben Bayliss weighed in 8 fish for 12lb 15oz. In second place John Henshall and Mike Laycock weighed in 8 fish for 14lb 1oz. However the overall winner’s were Tom Nelson and Jon Henderson who stormed the field and weighed in 9 rainbows for 14lb 13oz.
The biggest fish of the day was taken by Esthwaite Peregrine and England international Alistair Beaumont, in the form of a 3lb 6oz rainbow. Alistair and the top three pairs shared the £3500 worth of cash, tackle and season ticket prizes.
The final day dawned overcast, similar to the practice day, with several boats locating the fish and choosing the best methods to employ. Winning tactics on the big day were Di-5 line fished in conjunction with blobs and damsels, however a good number of contestants chose to fish intermediates and fast glass lines as the fish were close to the surface.
The presentation was conducted by angling legend Bob Church, who’s presence alone was enough to inspire some fantastic camaraderie throughout the prize giving and buffet at the end of the day.
